My path to achieve the greatest Linux desktop ever or… random IT stuff

Desktop of the Week

Aegis <3

Changed my desktop to XFCE again because KDE was driving me crazy from the slowness T_T

So now I’ve got my XFCE back and I’m ready to make it beautiful ^^

Also, background is Aegis from Persona 3, my new addiction <3 (yes, I do know no one plays PS2 anymore but I like classics)

  1. I’d say that for KDE you need a bit more memory. I was also running KDE with 1GB but it improved a lot when I upgraded to 2GB. I also tried other desktops before upgrade, but I just missed too many things from KDE

  2. You’re my first comment so thank you for that ^^

I’ll have a go at another desktops before I upgrade my memory for the simple reason that I want to avoid spending money for the time being. I’m thinking about trying Openbox again now that I’m a bit more knowledgeable about Arch.

I’ve also been recommended to Chakra which is based on Arch and has a lighter version of KDE so I might give it a try, if I get tired of XFCE and Openbox.

it must be a huge change from Windows to this Linux distro..

    • I changed from Windows to Ubuntu first, and then, about a year later, to Arch Linux. From my experience, the best distro/DW combination for recent Windows-to-Linux users is Kubuntu:
Ubuntu because it’s the easiest distro to use imo and KDE because the way things are organized remind me a bit of Windows and it might be easier for a newcomer

What about the software and games that i have installed in my Windows? Did they worked under Linux (via WINE for example)?

  4. the majority of software I tried works but it’s not really necessary – Linux has the most amazing alternatives ever.

As to the games, well… I still have my Windows in dual boot so that I can play my favorite games once in a while… It’s all about knowing what suits you best – I’m not much of a computer gamer so I didn’t have many problems with that – I mainly play in my Wii or Xbox360 or Playstation 3 or my PSP or even my pretty PS2 and GameBoy Color whenever I have the urge to play something. My netbook and even my desktop at home, are mainly for work and hobbies other than playing.
